UK poultry industry faces suspension of trade with five countries

The British poultry industry received another shock after South Korea and Hong Kong decided to halt poultry imports from UK following the outbreak of bird flu on a Suffolk turkey farm. These two countries are latest to ban UK poultry imports after Russia, Japan and South Africa as these countries have already banned poultry imports. Britain is the second largest poultry producer in Europe after France and it exports poultry to the tune of £300 million annually. The British Poultry Council has said that poultry export constitutes around 10 percent of the industry’s annual revenue. The industry would certainly be badly affected as a total of five nations have officially halted UK poultry imports. Whereas four countries have banned all the poultry products Russia is still allowing importation of cooked meats. U.K poultry exports to Russia accounts for £11 million a year. South Korea had imported UK poultry to the tune of £1.5 million last year. However, Japan while banning all the poultry products it decided to continue imports of British chicks for breeding and this trade is worth around £ 200,000 a year. The UK poultry industry will definitely suffer a setback due to five bans in place however; the economic impact will not be too significant as it exports its 75-80 percent of poultry products to the member states of the European Union.
